1914-1915. Very rare cigarette premium* T307 Type Miniature by Phillips Publishing / Winthrop Press* This booklet was part of a series released in 1914 in the World's Best Short Stories series and one story was included with packages of Egyptienne Straight cigarettes, Piccadilly Little Cigars, and Sovereign cigarettes.* Miniature paperback 2.25" x 2.75" softbound 32 page miniature* Cover and one interior illustration in color*
It is Winthrop Press’ 1914 series of contemporary literature. In the December 1978 issue of Miniature Book News, Bob Massmann and Julian Edison produced a list of 102 titles in this series, with the expectation of finding more. In the article, they noted that they were offered as premiums by cigarette companies and the Knights of Columbus. They were also offered in small-boxed sets of five volumes. I have one box from Murray’s, a fine restaurant in NYC, and three others that carry the name of ‘John H. Eggers, House of Little Books, New York’.

Also:
Attractive group of of titles from the Winthrop Press series of miniatures, originally distributed as premiums in packets of Egyptienne “Straights” Cigarettes. As one might expect, given the medium of distriubtion within the context of the social mores of the time, the booklets tend toward rough-and-ready “manly fiction,” with such pop- ular men’s authors as O. Henry, Rudyard Kipling, George Randolph Chester and George Allan England well-represented. According to the publisher’s blurb printed on the inside of each cover, the series included “...One story accompanying each package [with] 100 titles ready [and] more in preparation.”
The Knights of Columbus – at this time the world’s largest fraternal service organization –shipped vast quantities of Egyptienne cigarettes with these enclosed story-premiums to American soldiers overseas during World War I, making these pamphlets an interesting precursor to the Armed Services Editions of the 1940s.
